You can take and pass English for Speakers of Other
Languages (ESOL) course to demonstrate your knowledge of language and life in
the UK, before you apply for
naturalisation as a British citizen, spouse visa and indefinite leave to remain
(ILR).
- ESOL Entry 1 (lowest)
- ESOL Entry 2
- ESOL Entry 3 (highest)
If your English skills are above ESOL Entry 3 level, you need to pass the Life in the UK test before you are eligible to apply for settlement. The test consists of 24 multiple-choice questions, based on the information in the Handbook LIFE IN THE UK: A journey to Citizenship, spouse visa and British citizenship.
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, you can
study ESOL at three entry levels:
